Fourteen European galleries are taking part in the Paréidolie contemporary drawing fair this year and 2000 visitors are expected. Two splendid days for exploring the inexhaustible ingenuity of those who picture the world with lines.
One day after Art-O-Rama opens at the Friche Belle de Mai, this year’s Paréidolie drawing fair at the Château de Servières joins it in signalling the start of the new contemporary art season. It’s the first event in a season of exhibitions of drawing and its offshoots, organised jointly with Marseille Expos at venues in Marseille, Saint-Rémy, Aubagne, Istres, Port-de-Bouc, Châteauneuf-le-Rouge and elsewhere. In Marseille, for example, FRAC is showing works never before seen in public and the Musée Grobet Labadie (midway between Château de Servières and the Friche Belle de Mai) is opening especially for the occasion. Martine Robin, Françoise Aubert, Michèle Sylvander et Lydie Marchi, the organisers, have won what might have seemed a risky wager: that art lovers were ready to rediscover the infinite variety and intrinsic qualities of drawing as an art form. One that ranges from the simplest techniques to the most sophisticated, from spontaneous gesture to meticulously-calculated study, from ink and pencil to chalk, charcoal and sanguine; to digital, watercolour, prints, sketches and slides; from allusion to description; furtive, incisive, bold or dainty; and from the stone age to the digital age.
