Food trucks have come a long way from their early days as chippies and pizza vans. Even in France these days your restaurant, deli or wine bar will roll right up to your door.
The French have adopted the food truck! There’s no need any more to head to a fast-food outlet for a quick bite or search the Web for a caterer to supply your wedding, cocktail party or other event. These days the food truck is there to assuage the hunger pangs or liven up an event in an original way. These gaily decorated food vans have little in common with the humble chippie of yore; the new generation uses local produce to offer classic cuisine or totally innovative recipes. It’s a whole new concept. So much so that the Hameau des Baux luxury resort has one of its own in the garden. We’ve hunted down some of the best in the region for you.
Off we go
In Marseille it all began with Food Trucks en Friche on the roof of the Friche Belle de Mai in 2013, when Marseille-Provence was European Capital of Culture. The trucks and their Michelin-starred chefs were there throughout that year-long culture fest – and they are still in operation. Next stop Kabanon à boulettes, easily spotted by its little coloured lights. The boulettes in question are fish balls, meat balls, potato balls and all sorts of balls: simple food but real, delicious quality.
To enliven your party, the famous Italian restaurant La Stazione will send its vintage Fiat vans; there’s a DJ truck and one with a wood-fired pizza oven, for example. Meanwhile Grégoire, behind the counter of the Thaï Food truck, shares some of his exotic recipes with us. And Gaston le Camion, an old butcher’s van from Avignon market, is enjoying a new lease of life thanks to Jane and Linda and their tasty snacks.
