A scent of modernity wafts through these time-honoured walls, once home to the noted Tourrel d'Almeran-Maillane family of Saint-Rémy. Inspired by the superb architecture of this 18th-century townhouse, Ralph and Margot took the enormous risk of combining more than three centuries of elegant living with designer styles from the 1920s to today. The result is stunning. Re-edited Eileen Gray pieces rub shoulders with items by Konstantin Grcic, the Munich-based prince of modern design. Seven light, bright suites, a lounge terrace, a rooftop pool: it's all wonderful, not least the restaurant and its luscious menu by Benoît Fauci. A further pleasure is the wine bar with its
intimate, personal atmosphere. Gounod would have loved to stage the preview of his opera Mireille
here, as he did in 1863 with poet Frédéric Mistral in the audience.
