He made his name beneath the 18th-century vaults of L’Alcôve in Rue Constantin, but that’s all in the past. Now he has his own place, opening onto a small cobbled square with big plane trees, between the Prêcheur and the Arts et Métiers. The restaurant is nicely done out and very functional. Pierre Chatelain focuses on choosing good wines – he’s named his eatery after the king of Provençal grape varieties – while young Laura from Burgundy works wonders in the kitchen. She takes inspiration from Scandinavia, the Middle East and of course France, her principal mentor having been Mathias Dandine, a few miles from here. People are flocking to the Grenache for the wine selection at super-friendly prices, the cool atmosphere and the ever-present lusciousness.
