Les Docks, across the road from the Terrasses du Port and its waterfront promenade, is now open. One more attraction in this booming area of west Marseille.
Food takes pride of place at Les Docks, with delicatessens, a market, a wine store and restaurants. Fast food is foremost, as befits an area that is mainly busy in the daytime. There are various sandwich bars, American-style hamburgers at Bieh, tapas and grills served with good wines at Zinc Zinc, a crêpe parlour serving cider by the bowl
(L’Ambassade de Bretagne), dish-of-the-day and a long bar counter at Le Comptoir des Docks, a touch of Asian exoticism at the Panasia, and Marseille’s favourite speciality of little boat-shaped biscuits at Four des Navettes.
There’s fashion of course: T-shirts at the Triaaangles boutique, jeans, women’s ready-to-wear at Manhé, gear for outdoor types at MCS (a.k.a. Marlboro Classics) and babywear at Aaron & Co, which has lovely toys as well as rompers. On the health and beauty side there are hair salons Biguine and Mod’s Hair, a nail bar and, to get you in top form, a Virtus training centre offering boxing, yoga, RPM cycling and more. As to design, there’s something for every taste from a large antiques store to La Ligne Claire, which stocks a clever blend of Charlotte Perriand-style vintage furniture and modern-day designers. Top marks for the Grand Playground concept store where you’ll find fashion, art, design, food and music in one vast, industrial-chic space.
